Como won 9-1 at Lens on Wednesday, in the Champions League. Nine goals in one evening. Historic. I’m weighing my words.
And then my thermometer stalled. Normally I have two boxes. Historic or disgrace. But this wasn’t a Belgian club, not the Red Devils, not the Flames (Belgium’s women). I watched the score from the stand in my living room, seat 14 of the sofa, and I had no “we”. Without a “we”, the disgrace box doesn’t light up. I checked twice.
So I read 20 Minutes. According to them, no French club had ever lost by eight goals at home in the Champions League. The only other gap like it in Europe for a French club is MTK Hungaria against Strasbourg, 10-2, in 1961. Sixty-five years without seeing that. Historic, that is. Well, not bad, statistically.
In the WhatsApp group “Sunday Devils”, my brother-in-law sent “9-1” and nothing else. Twelve members, eleven of whom answered with a number. We’re all acting like we always knew Como had it in them.
Nine goals away from home, Nadine. Tactically, I’d like to see the pitch.
As for me, my only disgrace is that it took me twenty minutes to file this score somewhere. In the end I made a third box by hand, in biro: “historic, but for the neighbours”. My thermometer has never had three boxes. That’s historic too.
So Como now has an eight-goal margin on the books. Now we take it one game at a time, you know.
It’s true, we checked: 20 Minutes.
