Silly question, but bigger than what?
The Guardian writes that Manchester United beat Roma in the “Bigger Cup”. I read that on the 7:32 train, notebook open, and created a tab straight away. A bigger cup. So there must be a smaller one. I looked for the Small Cup, the Medium Cup. Nothing. I checked, and actually nobody knows. Well, everyone in the newsroom knows, but nobody wanted to explain it to me without laughing.
I noted the rest of the match properly. United had gone nine games without a win. According to The Guardian, the team played very badly in the first half and were lucky to be only 2-0 down. Then they won. There was a penalty described as somewhat fortuitous. I underlined “somewhat”. A foul is a foul where I come from. Basketball doesn’t have that, I looked.
Matheus Cunha celebrated the winning goal in a way the source calls a little excessive. New tab: scale of celebrations. I’m missing the unit. How many arms, how many metres of running to go from normal to a little excessive?
On Amazon Prime, Nicky Butt, Ashley Young and Wayne Rooney judged their old club’s first half harshly, then were far more positive after the second. One opinion per half: I find that methodical, I made two columns. On Tuesday evening, United supporters criticised the manner of the win on radio phone-in shows. They won and still criticised. I don’t have a tab for that yet.
Louise, winning and moaning is the same gesture. I’m weighing my words.
After the match, the talk was mostly about the future of Michael Carrick as head coach. You beat Roma in the bigger cup, and people talk about something else. I held out my notebook to Freddy, please, so he could write me the rule. He drew a 4-4-2.
Next match: Aston Villa, Sunday, at home. I asked if that was in the Bigger Cup. No. Anyway, I still have a lot to learn.
It’s true, we checked: The Guardian.
