Ronaldo adds his CV to his disciplinary defence: Louise looks for the cover letter

Suspended for thirty days and fined 255 euros by the Portuguese federation, Cristiano Ronaldo had submitted his sporting CV, prizes and awards included, to the disciplinary committee to get a lighter sanction. As the suspension is retroactive, he should not miss any further international match.

Louise hands a résumé to a suited disciplinary panel that studies it like a job application, her notebook and stopwatch on the table.

Silly question, but since when do you send a CV to people who aren’t hiring? I read this on the 7:32 train, notebook open at the tab marked “Proceedings”. Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, submitted his sporting CV to the disciplinary committee of the Portuguese federation, with the prizes and awards he has received during his career.

Let me go back to the beginning, because my notebook likes order. At the end of September, he left the Portugal training camp after a row with head coach Jorge Jesus, who according to Ronaldo had not kept several agreements. The federation opened disciplinary proceedings. In his defence, he pointed to the statement he had published earlier, about 2,000 words. And he added the CV.

The committee writes it down itself, in the quote carried by VoetbalPrimeur: “Regarding the mitigating circumstances, including his great services to football and recognition for sporting achievements, Cristiano Ronaldo has submitted his sporting CV, including the prizes and awards he has received throughout his career.”

According to Sky Sports, he wanted his services to Portuguese and international football to count as a mitigating circumstance. I checked, and actually nobody knows how you read a CV in a disciplinary committee. Do they tick off the trophies? Is there a “hobbies and interests” section? Basketball doesn’t have that, I looked: you take your technical foul and go back to the bench.

The outcome of the proceedings: a thirty-day suspension and a 255-euro fine. According to a Sky Sports estimate, Ronaldo earns that sum in 39 seconds at Al Nassr. I timed 39 seconds on my phone. I only had time to write “255”.

Louise, the cover letter was the 2,000 words. The CV is the appendix. At our place the club delegate staples the two together.

Freddy · the gaffer, fictional character

The suspension is retroactive: he should not miss any further international match. So the CV went in, the punishment came out, and the punishment starts before the decision. I filed “retroactive” under the tab “Words to have explained again”. Anyway, I still have a lot to learn.

It’s true, we checked: VoetbalPrimeur.be.
