The news that overlaps a little

3-0 against Turkey at Sclessin: historic for Nadine, “ugly” for Montella

Belgium beat Turkey 3-0 at Sclessin. Turkey coach Vincenzo Montella called the match balanced and the score “ugly”, with nothing to blame his players for.

Nadine holds a cone of fries and her phone, raising a broken thermometer in front of a scoreboard reading 3-0.

3-0 against Turkey at Sclessin. That’s historic. I’m weighing my words. I sent the score to “Sunday Devils” before I’d even finished my cone of chips. My brother-in-law gave it a thumbs-up. From him, that’s a standing ovation.

Then I read the press conference of Vincenzo Montella, the Turkish coach. He said the match was “balanced on the whole, even from a statistical point of view”. My temperature dropped at once. Balanced? I checked the score again. Still 3-0.

He gave his numbers. Forty touches for Turkey in our box, no goals. Twenty-six for us in theirs, three goals. So we let them in forty times. Forty. That’s a disgrace. I’m weighing my words. Well, forty times without conceding, that takes some doing. Historic, really. For the defence. Well, not bad.

Montella called 3-0 an “ugly” result. I thought it was very pretty. We just don’t see it the same way, that’s all. I’m not saying this because I’m a supporter. Well, yes.

Twenty-six touches for three goals. That’s a flat-pitch ratio, that is.

Freddy · the gaffer, fictional character

He also pointed out that Turkey got back to the World Cup after 24 years under him and was promoted to League A of the Nations League. He says he isn’t worried and stays motivated and focused for the next matches. That, I recognise. It’s exactly what I write in the group after a defeat. Now we take it one game at a time, you know.

It’s true, we checked: RTBF Sport.

  • Funniness 2/5

  • Good nature 3/5
