The maths is simple. Twelve goals conceded since the start of the season, six of them from set pieces, two of those penalties. Three came from a corner, in three different matches: Cercle Brugge, Westerlo, and Gent on Friday night. At Westerlo a free-kick was added to the corner.
Asked about it after the defeat at Gent, Vincent Euvrard did not dodge. “Too little precision and quality in carrying out our tasks. We’re not the tallest team in this league, and we actually lost height this summer compared with last season,” he told DH. And later, on the work of his assistant Fred Stilmant, to whom he delegates set pieces: “It’s costing us points, that’s true, but I remain confident in our methodology.”
In stand 2, seat 14, the thermometer did what it always does: both extremes in the same evening.
Three corners, three goals, in three different games, that’s a disgrace. I’m weighing my words. Now he reminds us that at RWDM they were the best in D1B (the second tier) at this, so he knows how to do it, so it’s almost historic. Well, not bad.
Euvrard also pointed out that at Dender the balance between set pieces conceded and set pieces created was one of the best in D1A, the top flight. The kind of sentence that gets read three times in a WhatsApp group of twelve people.
The methodology, fine, I’m not saying this to moan. Well, yes I am. But a methodology gets checked on a corner, not on a spreadsheet. Now we take it one game at a time.
It’s true, we checked: DH Les Sports+.
