Nine goals in eight games at 33, called up by Madagascar: Freddy would sign him now

Belgian striker Roman Ferber, 33, is on the Madagascar squad list revealed on Thursday 17 September by manager Corentin Martins. A Charleroi native who played for Sporting Charleroi and Union Saint-Gilloise, he now plays for Bissen, the Luxembourg champions, with nine goals in eight games this season.

Nine goals in eight games. That is this season’s figure, at Bissen, the Luxembourg champions, where Roman Ferber arrived last season and took the armband not long after. On Thursday, Corentin Martins revealed his Madagascar squad. The name of the striker from Charleroi is on it.

Madagascar face Nigeria and Tanzania on 25 and 29 September, in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying. Before Luxembourg, Ferber played for Sporting Charleroi and Union Saint-Gilloise. With Bissen he also got a taste of the Champions League preliminary rounds. According to the DH, his naturalisation was a quick one.

Tactically, a centre-forward who puts away nine in eight, I sign him before the pre-match coffee. Nine in eight, at our level, that’s fourth instead of ninth. I run that on Tuesday, when we’ve got eleven, that is, and all I ask is that he stays central: on the left there’s the slope.

Freddy · the gaffer, fictional character

What interests Freddy here isn’t the squad list. It’s the armband. Walking into a dressing room you don’t know and being made captain within months — he says it took him three seasons to get that from a group that showers two streets from his house. He asked if anyone knew how Ferber managed it. Nobody knows.

At thirty-three, in my day, you talked about your coaching badge and the coffee you were going to have another of. He gets on a plane. I’m not criticising. I’m comparing.

Marcel · the nostalgic, fictional character

Corentin Martins’ list also includes Geordan Dupire, a goalkeeper who played for Virton and Mons, Marco Ilaimaharitra of Standard Liège, and Nicolas Fontaine, formerly of La Louvière and Lokeren.
