The news that overlaps a little

“It’s no longer my problem,” says De Zerbi: Louise looks for who owns it

Before the game against Coventry, Roberto De Zerbi said that the situation of Richarlison, dropped from the Premier League squad list and sent down to Tottenham’s U21s, was “no longer [his] problem”. He pointed to chief executive Vinai Venkatesham and sporting director Johan Lange.

Louise, notebook in hand, follows two arrows from a coach to two empty desks, beneath a wall clock reading 8:30.

Silly question, but when a problem is “no longer” yours, whose was it before, and whose is it now?

I’ll go back over it in order, “Tottenham” tab of the notebook. The Spurs are bottom of the Premier League and haven’t won yet this season. They play Coventry this Monday, 19 October. Before that game, at his press conference, manager Roberto De Zerbi was asked about Richarlison. The player started the first matchday, a 3-0 defeat at Brentford, then was dropped, taken off the list of 25 registered players, and now plays with the U21s.

De Zerbi’s answer: “It’s no longer my problem. You have to ask Vinai (Venkatesham, the Spurs chief executive) and Johan (Lange, the sporting director).” He added that he had taken no decision in this matter.

So I drew a diagram. One arrow from the manager to the chief executive, another to the sporting director. In basketball, I checked, a problem also has a coach and a GM, but at least you know when the timeout ends. Here, the arrow doesn’t come back.

What I understand best is the address. “If he wants to talk about me, he knows where to find me. I’m in my office from 8.30am until the evening.” Finally, a piece of information you can locate. I was told that the group is in a good place, but never where; he gives opening hours. What time is evening? I’ve noted the question.

Meanwhile, Richarlison scored on Tuesday in the Jersey Mike’s Trophy against Cheltenham Town (2-2) and converted his penalty in a shoot-out lost 7-6. He has received several offers, including from Everton and Vasco da Gama.

A manager who gives out his office hours, that’s historic. I’m weighing my words.

Anyway, I still have a lot to learn.
