The news that overlaps a little

Four days after Real Madrid, Anderlecht put eight past Waregem: Nadine rereads 1984

In ten anecdotes published on 18 September, DH recalls that Anderlecht, top of the table, beat second-placed Waregem 8-2 at Parc Astrid on 1 December 1984, four days after a 3-0 win over Real Madrid. Eight years later, Waregem won 2-5 at Anderlecht.

Nadine at a café holds a thermometer upside down before a board reading 8-2 and two old press clippings.

On 1 December 1984, Anderlecht were first, Waregem were second, and it finished 8-2 at Parc Astrid. Four days earlier, the Sporting had beaten Real Madrid 3-0. Alex Czerniatynski scored a hat-trick against Urbain Haesaert’s side. DH files all of that into its 18 September list, between two other stories.

Beating Real and putting eight past the team in second in the same week, that’s historic. And I’m not saying that because I’m a supporter. All right, I am. But eight goals against the side in second also means the side in second conceded eight, and that, honestly, is a disgrace. Both, the same afternoon. My thermometer no longer knows which way up to be held.

Nadine · the season-ticket holder, fictional character

The rest of the list gives her vertigo in the other direction. On 25 September 1992, Waregem won 2-5 at Anderlecht and ended a run of twenty-seven away trips there without a win: two draws, twenty-five defeats. Vidmar scored twice, Yvan Desloover added one. For Anderlecht coach Luka Peruzovic, it was the beginning of the end: Michel Verschueren called him in.

Twenty-seven trips to the same ground for two points, then a 2-5. The kind of statistic that turns over all at once, on a Friday night.

Twenty-seven trips to win once. People waited, back then. Nobody changed their mind after three matches. Well. It’s the times.

Marcel · the nostalgic, fictional character

The most recent Anderlecht – (Zulte) Waregem finished 2-4, with a hat-trick and an ovation for former Waregem star Thorgan Hazard. Nadine would like it noted that an ovation for an opponent is also a temperature.
